MILLER COLLEGE CHILDREN’S LITERATURE PROJECT RECEIVES
EXPERT IN RESIDENCE GRANT FROM THE W.K. KELLOGG FOUNDATION

The Miller College Children’s Literature Project has been awarded $20,000 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s local Expert in Residence program. This funding will support the efforts of Miller College to host local author and illustrator, David Small and wife and author, Sarah Stewart, in Battle Creek for three days, March 16 - 18, 2010, in conjunction with the College’s book writing and illustration contest, initiated in the schools in August 2009.
The mission of the College’s Children’s Project is to reach out to school age children, teachers, and parents in Calhoun County and beyond to solidify Miller College's place as their hometown, bachelor degree-completion college. Miller College intends to host an event each year and continue to give back to the community by offering opportunities to explore, learn, and develop the minds of our local youth.

On March 16, 2010, Miller College will host a book sale and signing and will feature David Small and Sarah Stewart, along with five other local authors, Buffy Silverman; Lauri Hart; Chad Lampert; and Amanda Andrews and Tracy Wendt. The event will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Miller College, 450 North Avenue, in Battle Creek.

On March 17, 2010, the 30 third, fourth and fifth grade winners of the book writing and illustration contest will be announced and acknowledged by not only their community but also by David Small and Sarah Stewart, who will give a presentation prior to the awards ceremony.

The final day of the couple’s stay, March 18, 2010, will be busy hosting an Educational Symposium at Lakeview High School’s Black Box Theater. A presentation will be followed by a Q & A session and interaction. If you are interested in attending, please call Jenny Andrews at Miller College, (269) 660-8021 for more information.
